Intravenous fluid therapy for patients with dehydration or fluid loss.
What It Is
IV hydration therapy replaces fluid directly into the bloodstream using sterile normal saline. It is used where dehydration or fluid loss is significant enough that drinking fluids is not keeping up — for example after a prolonged illness with vomiting or diarrhoea, or with heat exposure.
What to Expect
A clinician places a small IV line and the fluid runs while you rest. Most people feel steadier as the fluid goes in. The appointment is straightforward and you can usually leave once the bag has finished.
Is It Right for You?
We assess you first, because dehydration can accompany conditions that need treating in their own right, and because fluid needs care in people with heart or kidney disease. Severe dehydration warrants emergency assessment rather than an outpatient visit.
